Enterprise

2012

Objects that have sentimental value or distinct personalities that transcend utility seem to more easily secure their long term position in one’s life. Perfect, flawless objects can be anonymous and lifeless, identical to the thousands of copies existing elsewhere.

Enterprise (named retroactively for its resemblance to the Starship Enterprise) is a folding stool with an anthropomorphic flaw. Elastic bungee cord weaves through its tripod legs, forcing a precarious stance by default. When sat on, the legs splay and lock securely in place. However, if one moves too quickly while getting up the bungee pulls the legs inward, making the stool immediately unstable and causing it to topple. Enterprise is a stool with a learning curve, a relationship you must nurture for what might normally be one-sided. With practice, Enterprise invites you to use it as a vehicle to scoot across the floor like an inchworm.
