Legacy Format
2011
When the world transitioned from residential gas-powered lighting to electric, old infrastructure and design lingered. Gas sconces and chandeliers made from brass and blown glass inspired similar ornate forms in new electric lighting. Modern advances in lighting technology have led to compact LEDs, allowing designers even more flexibility in form and materials. Even so, familiar elements like cylindrical lampshades continue to be featured in new products: vestigial design traits that we grasp in fear of a sterile future.Legacy Format is a prosthetic for a soon-to-be discarded classic, the Anglepoise task lamp. Standard lightbulb threads are machined into the brass candle holder, allowing Legacy Format to form a symbiotic relationship with its endangered host object. This alliance is a celebration of forms that continue to be culturally recognizable regardless of their current or eventual lack of utility.
