Split
2012
The unpredictable human hand is often masked by a set of rules and best practices seen in traditional furniture making. An endless parade of precision tools and instrumentation at one’s disposal in the name of quality can lead to a lack of evidence of the artisan’s hand. The Split series uses steel wedges typically employed to set the head of a hammer to the wooden handle; a utilitarian and brutish example of joinery. After all the individual parts are milled, assembly is performed by aggressively driving the wedges into exposed tenons, splitting the wood and putting the joint under permanent tension.
